The Doors were probably the most significant group in Los Angeles that was not surf-oriented. Their unique variety of electric blues gave the Doors an aura of profundity that has grown during the decades since lead singer Jim Morrison's death in 1971. By themselves, Morrison's lyrics read like adolescent posturing, but with his sexually charged delivery, Ray Manzarek's organ and Robby Krieger's jazzy guitar, they become eerie, powerful and dark. Although a blues-based band, the Doors established themselves as a national success in 1967 with their first album, "The Doors".
