As a child actor/singer, Phil Collins starred in London plays and landed small parts in several films, including a cameo in A Hard Day's Night. He cut his acting career short in 1970, however, when he joined Genesis as replacement drummer. Following the departure of front man Peter Gabriel, Genesis auditioned over 400 singers before handing Collins the reins. As Genesis' lead singer, Collins developed his signature sound and, while still part of the band, launched a solo career in '81 with the release of Face Value and the now classic "In The Air Tonight".
